Because shops found that their customers preferred brown eggs by a factor of something like 9 to 1. They cost the same, have the same nutritional values and like for like, taste the same. So shops stopped selling them. They've also found that customers like a dark yellow yolk and so additives are often put in chicken food to darken them.
During the 80s there was a wholemeal fad, where everyone ate more brown bread because it was healthier. Some real idiots thought that this also applied to eggs, and so the demand for white eggs fell. The shell colour makes no difference. Sad but true.
