Do you mean the council provided ones? Do they even provide them any more? The commercial ones do vary but I have heard good things about Wiltshire Farms. Your other option, which my Mum did was just get the supermarket prepared ready meals which just go in the microwave or oven
Some microwave meals are nice, some not so. I suppose it would depend on your budget. M&S, imo, have the best ready meals but it could work out expensive.
My granny used Wiltshire Farms. She was very pleased with them. Especially with the nice young man who carried all the packets up to her flat and put everything away in the freezer. Only need to microwave then.
Waitrose do lovely ready made meals, some better than other admittedly, and I think I'd rather have those than meals on wheels. Tesco Finest are supposed to be nice as well so I hear.
I always thought ummm DID like cooking...her meals often sound lovely.
Anyway...yes, the M and S meals can be good. I've gotten them for times I don't want to think about cooking. They are often on offer at 3 for £10. But the portions can be small.. depending on your appetite. If it's fish, I'll eat the whole pack. The ones made with boneless chicken are far more generous.
I used to work in the kitchen of a care home. When we had to close the kitchen for 2 weeks for rebuilding, we got Wiltshire Farm Foods as a replacement. They are microwave complete meals but better quality than the normal supermarket ones. All the residents complained about not getting 'fresh cooked food' but after a day or two the complaints stopped. They liked the wider choice , 5 or more options rather than just 2. When the kitchen reopened they ALL complained again but about having to go back to the normal menu.
A work friend of mine fed her family Wiltshire farm meals when she had her kitchen redone. She said the portions were a bit small so her teens and her husband used to split meals so they all got a meal and a half but the quality was excellent.
^ Wiltshire Farm Foods are designed for elderly people and the portion sizes are smaller than 'ordinary' ones . None of our residents ever complained about the portion size, which was very much the same as we served from the kitchen.
A quick view of the Wiltshire site suggests it has the same issue as many supermarket, or branded, ready meals. Larger portion of the main item, but looks light on the five a day veg.
