yes I did this in the US where atora is not available. Firstly there is a vegetarian atora, but this to my recall is made from hydrogenated fat and you might not want to use it. What I did in the US was to freeze butter, then grate it and use instead of suet, same amount of flour and water, same mixing and cooking methods. Only thing is that you need to mix quite quickly using a fork and shape with a spoon because if you use your hands, the butter melts
You can also make tasty dumplings using mashed potato, flour and some herbs. Either put them in the stew for a while to cook or put them in boiling water until they float.
This a recipe for Kartoffelkle..Potato dumplings.
This is how my M-I-L used to make them.
4 medium potatoes, boiled
4ozs sifted flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 Tablespoons grated onion with juice
4ozs dried bread crumbs
1 1/2 tsp melted butter
1 egg, slightly beaten

1/2 tsp salt

Rice the potatoes. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. Combine riced potatoes, flour mixture, onion, bread crumbs, butter and egg.

Mix well. Shape into 12 small balls and dredge lightly with flour. Chill. Drop dumplings into boiling salted water.

Cover and boil 15 minutes.
