Why are mince pies only made around Christmas?

Mince pies were originally oblong shaped to represent Jesus' manger and they were filled with minced lamb tongue, or ox tongue(can't remember which).
Knights who fought in the Crusades returned with exotic spices and fruits and people began to alter their choice of fillings from savoury to sweet.
Thank goodness for that!
