Any tips for freezing milk. Ours (semi-skimmed) comes in plastic bottles.

I simply freeze the whole bottle, never a problem Allen.
I do the same as Mamya, be aware it takes an age to defrost, especially the 6 pint bottles
it will expand a bit. What do you use milk for? If it's for tea/coffee it mighr be better to freeze it in ice cubes, then you dont have to defrost it all at the time

How about thawing, mamya. In fridge or room?
Do you need to tip any out to give expansion room?
Semi skimmed or fully skimmed will freeze just fine. (Don’t try it with full fat milk because it tends to separate on defrosting).
Ensure there is vacant space in the bottle before putting it in the freezer as it expands.
Remember to take out of the freezer to defrost in plenty of time. It takes a good 24 hours in the fridge.
Freeze in plastic bottles allowing room for expansion. Defrost in the fridge. Will be ok for up to 6 months
I usually take out at night and leave it lay on a tea towel in my cool kitchen.

I have never had one expand and split.
I prefer semi-skimmed milk after it has been frozen, seems much richer and creamier, I don't know why.
You can freeze it straight as it is or drain a bit out so the expansion helps keep the bottle shape. We usually store a couple of small bottles (kept from previous purchases) so we dont have to thaw a big one out if we have forgotten to take one out night before.

when I was continually travelling to Bruxelles I used to freeze one then take it on the Eurostar. It was nicely thawed next morning for teas (also take your own bags ) in the hotel fridge. Their tea and milk is disgusting.

Thanks all. The multiple 1 pint bottles makes good sense, just using what you need.
The milk goes a funny yellowish colour when it freezes but that's normal and it goes back to its regular colour when it defrosts.
I've seen ice cube bags being used to freeze shots of milk for hot drinks.
We regularly freeze semi-skilled milk with so far as we can tell no noticeable difference on defrosting which we do bowl at room temperature by standing the carton/bottle in a small to collect the condensation. It needs to be shaken up at the end (before opening) to remix the water, protein and fat properly, it does segregate a bit if kept for more than a couple of weeks or so. We have stored it for more than six months when necessary.
I freeze blue top milk in the bottle all the time. Same as Mamya, take it out and leave in the kitchen on a tea-towel, it goes back to completely normal.
16.56,Yes but allen does not need to take his own tea bags,or take a bottle of milk on Eurostar, because he aint travelling to Bruxelles.
He just wants to know if (semi skimmed milk ) can be frozen.
Just shove it in the freezer, no probs freezing or defrosting.
We freeze full fat and don’t have any problems with it separating.
Gulliver, cool it. :-)
