yes and yes and it goes green when it is cooked
I chop up purple sprouting broccoli and put it in a stir fry. Don't think it tastes much different from the green type but a bit finer in texture.
Steamed purple sprouting broccoli with melted butter if one of life's true gastronomic pleasures.
I've had it several times in restaurants (usually when someone else was paying, as it only seems to get on the menu in 'posh' places!), and always liked it, but I can't really remember the flavour well enough to describe it. However this site says "It has a stronger flavour than ordinary broccoli, sort of half way between asparagus and cauliflower"

My father in law used to grow it. Its ok but NOTHING like asparagus. I used to enjoy it but can't digest it now. I reckon its employed the same PR firm as kale did.

I never thought it would change colour but thought it would have tasted different, even sweeter perhaps
The cooking water goes purple
Although I love cauliflower I could never get away with broccoli. Strange as it's more or less the same plant. I can eat it if put in front of me but would never think of buying it. I suppose you could ask if there is any difference between green cabbage and red cabbage, or white onion and red onion.

I love it and it stays purple if steamed. It has a stronger taste than ordinary broccoli. It goes beautifully with lamb and new potatoes.
I like it mixed in with some mashed potato
jesmond, I have tried purple carrots and found them nowhere near as tasty as the orange ones

Thats interesting woofgang, you are the first person who has ever admitted they have even tried purple carrots, ive never seen them for sale but the pics ive seen of them dont look very attractive
I think purple was the original colour for carrots, but the Dutch bred orange ones in honour of their royal family.
I like to grow purple sprouting broccoli, its my favourite. I'd say its slightly stronger and tastier than the green calabrese, which we all call regular broccoli.
