Casein Protein

Thanks for the reply. I picked up a promotional pack (not casein) this morning from Holland and Barrett to give it a try.
May I ask why? Is there a particular reason for wanting protein in a liquid form rather than via solid food. Just wondering.

I'm type 2 diabetic and on a low carb diet. The drinks will help me reduce my carbs even further. I'm hoping this will get me into remission. On my last doctors appointment, she said I was nearly there.
You should safely be able to do that with diet, without resorting to what is an artificial product.
Take a look at diabetes.co.uk. There is a lot of advice and an excellent forum for low carbers.

Like pasta, I have certain concerns and reservations, but as you are under medical supervision, they are somewhat allayed.
I like the 69p ones from home bargains
It depends on how much knowledge a Dr has about nutrition and current research. It's not covered extensively at med school.

I'm presently trying to keep each meal down to 50g carbs. Porridge and oat bran in the morning, 2 slices of bread with a filling for lunch and a cooked dinner with plenty of green veg (I have an allotment). No snacking between meals and no beer:-(
I get very hungry leading up to meals, hence drinking the high protein stuff.
OK melv, you seem to be on the right track, although personally I would exchange the drinks for a handful of nuts.
Your diet looks good for a Type 2 diabetic.
Don't get too obsessive about your food intake as it looks pretty adequate to me.
And I'd suggest some eggs...omelette, or frittata, egg salad...for breakfast or lunch some days. Eggs are very nutritious. Or, have a boiled egg or bit of protein like chicken, nuts as recommended by sqad or even some toasted sunflower or pumpkin seeds if you are hungry between meals.
High protein low carb drinks are just crazy marketing - I recently looked at buying a brand - 250ml in my gym - I looked at the nutritional value, the protein was the same as the protein found in skimmed milk, I am (was maybe) type 2 diabetic, I now weigh my carbs to 60gm per meal, plenty of protein in fish, meat and eggs and often add a 0% fat or low fat yogurt to the day - I am in remission since January, I think these drinks you are looking at are a money racket - like Pasta and sqad suggest, get your protein from your food, it's a lifestyle choice not a sprint and a hurry to get into remission. you need to be able to maintain the lifestyle you strive for
..forgot nuts
I looked at one of the protein drinks on the H and B site...an egg has the same protein...and less carbs. More fat but not enough really to be a worry.

I forgot to mention that I'm on statins for cholesterol, so I've got to keep the fat intake down. Cheese, bacon, butter etc have all been reduced.
My main motivation is a friend of mine has had type 2 for about 5yrs. He's not watched his diet or drinking... he's now losing his eyesight!
Btw, thank you for all your replies.
Melv, I too was on statins, my cholestoral levels are now low enough to be taken off them plus a lot of heart meds and the beta blocker i was on following a heart attack back in 2016 - I've had the retinopathy test - my eyesight is not as bad as had been in the past, all down to my new eating habits, my portion size on plate of ¼ carb, ¼ protein and the rest filled with veg, 2 healthy snacks per day - I get plenty of protein in my diet with all the foods mentioned below - see if you can make an appointment with your diabetic nurse or dietician, you shouldn't need protein drinks. there are healthy fats in some of the foods on your list plus cheese, not go crazy on it but you can have lighter varieties and maybe even cottage cheese. Plenty (2 litres min) of water, get out for a walk a few times a day or do some gardening, you won't end up like your friend.
Excellent post by duckie.
Thank you sqad - I'm better able to help or post something when I type from my own experience
duckies......quite.
