When I take the trouble to make a pie about twice a year or buy them for that matter, I end up feeling guilty re the pastry and throw the pastry out.

Or do you mean you cook the pies then feel guilty about eating the pastry and so throw the pastry part of the pie away? If that is the case why make the blinking things in the first place? Why feel guilty about eating a portion of pastry two or three times a year? You're not a supermodel are you? and unless you are gluten intolerant what harm could it possiblly do?
