Why is it so difficult to buy the fresh ones?

I know of only one shop that does sell them and only in December. I went miles on Monday to see if they had them and cleared their shelves. Cannot remember the last time I was so chuffed with a purchase.

Have now made pounds and pounds of cranberry & orange relish, enough to give some as presents in kilner jars and some for the freezer. However, am now tempted to go back and buy more... Must remember to get another bottle of port, too.

Waitrose used to sell them frozen but no longer. Shame on them.

Fresh cranberries will really only sell in the lead-up to Christmas. I have to say that since making fresh cranberry sauce a few years ago, I could never return to bought jarred stuff...there is no comparison!

They have fresh cranberries in my local market.
I used to see them every year in Sainsbury's and Tesco. I've not looked this year.
I buy fresh ones from my local Tesco every year but I don't think there's much demand for them outside of Christmas.

Not in my "local" Waitrose, woof. I rely on the one independent green grocer. Darned annoying.

Quite so, Prudie. But I get through so much of the relish in 12 months and I keep my neighbour supplied with it too. She has many health problems and it is the one thing I make that she thoroughly enjoys. No Tesco around my country residence so I shall be going back to buy more. That will be Monday's shopping trip then;)
If you cleared the shelves Choux, you're best to phone ahead to make sure they have restocked before you drive miles again. They might be able to order extra if they know you're on your way.

Personally I have never bought a cranberry in my life, but the relish sounds tasty.
Maydup, I make cranberry relish, using Delia Smith's recipe, some of the ingredients in choux's recipe sound similar, I am wondering has choux drank the port ;) There is a great supply of fresh cranberries in my local supermarket and I too like to make them up for friends as Christmas gifts, last year, one of my friends sent me a text on St Stephen's day to ask had I a spare jar as her family loved it and she didn't have enough to cover the dinner for that day
I remember when Delia published that recipe and the whole country went mad for cranberries! I shall look out for a small jar in our local farm shop.

lol at ducksie - I am generous with the port, helps the relish to last longer ;)Yes, it is Delia's recipe and I also make her Cumberland sauce for the roast gammons.

Maydup, the recipe is so simple and the cooking time is just 5 minutes. The labour of love is removing every bit of pith from the orange peel but the reward is in the taste. I have just bought some more Kilner jars so some of my Christmas presents are now sorted.
