How To Open A Jar Of Marmalade

I’ve just tried to open a jar of Frank Cooper’s marmalade and failed miserably. I’ve got a gadget that I’m usually successful with, but the edges of the lid slope so it can’t grip. I ran boiling water over the lid, still no luck. Anyone with any bright ideas please?

Stab it through the lid with a sharp knife and it will release and open easily by hand. Just need to remember when you opened it though as it won't then be airtight when you close the lid but ok as long as you use it up fairly quickly.

Try to prise a knife blade (dinner knife, not kitchen knife) between the lid and one of the raised glass bits round the edge; give it a twist and you might hear a hiss or see the lid pop out a bit; then try to open it.

I use the bottle opener bit on a waiters friend corkscrew to lever up the edge of the lid to break the seal

i found that tying an elastic band round the edge of the lid gives a better grip and then turn it should open no problem

Who designed those lids with the sloping sides? Nutters!
I usually tap the lid hard all the way round with a large metal spoon- then use a silicone "grippy" mat...usually works.

mine is super cheap and has worked every time for me. wrap around several times and get a good grip, never fails..

I think fitzer's got the right idea; break the vacuum and the lid pops off easily.

Don't know if this is one of them, but there are some sealed jars where you have to push down pretty hard on a little indentation in the middle of the lid to 'break' the vacuum which then allows you to unscrew the lid easily.

helly... be very careful if you use a sharp-pointed knife like that - especially if you're on blood-thinners.

I really think the whole subject of opening items needs a rethink.

Half the child-proofing gimmicks these days render it a real pain to open stuff, and they all seem to have different mechanisms with inadequate or no instructions.

When I was a child, child-proofing meant keep it on a high shelf or in a locked cupboard.
