I’ve just tried to open a jar of Frank Cooper’s marmalade and failed miserably. I’ve got a gadget that I’m usually successful with, but the edges of the lid slope so it can’t grip. I ran boiling water over the lid, still no luck. Anyone with any bright ideas please?

Stab it through the lid with a sharp knife and it will release and open easily by hand. Just need to remember when you opened it though as it won't then be airtight when you close the lid but ok as long as you use it up fairly quickly.

I can open any jar. Pimpsy.
maybe you can but i found my way cheap and works
I pierce the lid too. Have done for years
i am too frightened of doing myself a mischief with piercing.
If you are going to stab the jar lid use an oven glove to hold the jar still so if the knife slips you've got some protection. If its hard to get hold of the jar with the glove hold it near to a wall on the work surface so it can't slip away.
i will stick to mine i think, then again i don't have many jars to open except the marmalade one
I stab the lid with a sharp pointy implement..sometimes a fork, sometimes a metal bbq skewer, sometimes a pointy thing from the tool box. Works every time.
I keep opened jars in the fridge anyway, doesn’t matter if the lid is pierced or not, the seal is broken.
Bang the edge of the lid either on a bread board or with a large wooden spoon (carefull not to hit the glass). Should be a lot easier after that.
I have a 'Y' shaped gadget which usually works but failing that, a carefully measured tap/s on the work surface seems to have the desired effect.
I use rubber gloves, just put them on as usual and Bobs yer uncle!!

... and as long as you don't break the jar...

I used to do it all the time at work...concrete underfloors help ;)
Gets rid of pent up whatever's too...
Can't you put your glass down for a moment, Lady J?
There are various styles of car oil filter removers. Many are ajustable to accommodate different dimensions. They will work.
If you stab the lid, it will work bur when you put the lid back on, put a bit of clingfilm over the top first, then it will remain airtight.
mine costs nowt and also works every time
agree emmie..but with this gadget you do not risk a wrist sprain.. I did that years ago and it recurs now....
