I'd like to cook some form of Hunters' Chicken but hate the thought of using BBQ sauce. Any suggestions for an alternative sauce?

any of the Campbell's condensed soups. Chicken, mushroom etc. make good sauces,
Could you do a tomato sauce? Honey and mustard?

What don't you like about bbq?

...but full of additives The Winner. Something from scratch would be better.
Question Author
Barmaid, I really don't like the sweet and sour combination. I do not like Bbq sauce on or in anything.
sorry Tilly2 thought you wanted a quick way of making it.....
I agree with The Winner. My mother introduced me to condensed soups as making useful sauces (and casserole bases, etc) when I first moved into a bedsit. These days I also use packet 'cup soups', made a bit thicker than on the instructions.

If you want the beefiness of barbecue sauce then oxtail soup might do the job. If you want something that's a more natural partner to chicken, try mushroom or chicken & leek soup.

No Chris, nothing in a tin!
Crossed posts!

If you want to do it all yourself, the chicken and bacon in your dish would be well complemented by a creamy mushroom sauce:

That mushroom sauce looks good. Thanks for that.
Buenchico, we love celery flavouring but can never make it from scratch strong enough. So we use Campbells condensed as a sauce, and it is perfect to go with breaded chicken strips etc.
Tilly2, good on you for making it from scratch.. Hope we are all invited for tea!

The authentic recipe for Hunters' Chicken can not have contained BBQ sauce, surely. It's a peasant dish, BBQ sauce was not available.
I'll make a garlicy tomato sauce I think.
Question Author
The Winner, I could not eat a tin of soup unless I was starving. I try to steer clear of chemical additives but thank you for your positive comment.
You're welcome Tilly2, it wouldn't do for us all to be the same.......
You can make your own sauce, according to Schwartz https://www.schwartz.co.uk/recipes/chicken/hunters-chicken
For a traditional take on the dish just Google a recipe for Chasseur Sauce.
Question Author
Thanks for that S37SJ but I really cannot abide tomato ketchup.
Even the smell of it puts me off.
I`d just do a coq au vin sauce then.
Question Author
It looks like it might turn into a Chicken Chasseur or a Coq au Vin...choices, choices???

Thanks Mamya and S37. :-)
Tilly, neither of us likes bbq sauce either. I’d probably make a sauce involving honey, mustard and creme fraisch. Or a creamy mushroom sauce.
