Spoon with a hole in it !!!

Can anyone tell me what the hole is for in a wooden cooking spoon ? Also is there a name for this particular type of spoon ?

Less resistence against what you are stirring, it should make it easier then. Makes it great for beating boyfriends with : )

I've got one of those, it's ideal for stirring sauces. Don't know if it has a name, but it could have eclesastical origins...............being holy !!!

I was told that this hole was for measuring pasta - it = a serving for 2....

I can envisage the hole being used to measure spaghetti, but farfalle, tortellini, fusilli and taglietelli nests etc would be a bit problematic! What's wrong with the British Standard Handful or is that for something else?
