Undisolved Jelly Cubes

I'm just eating some of these, Hartleys brand
and theres very little flavour - I'm confused as to how this little bit of flavour can get stronger after diluting it with a pint of water.

Is there some flavouring or sweetener that is only activated by boiling water or something?

Any ideas?

When I was a kid I used to love breaking of a cube while Mum wasn't looking and popping it into my mouth for a chew.

I used to eat jelly cubes but they really bloated me, especially after a hot drink

joko; I've never noticed that phenomenon. My taste buds are shot, after 75 long years, but my memory tells me that 'raw' jelly cubes were far superior to the watered-down soft stuff that ended up on the table at Sunday lunchtime. And where are the tinned mandarins of yesteryear?

I used to make the jellies using much less water to make a stronger taste.

I would quite often dissolve the cubes, add a fair few ice cubes to cool it down and then either drink the liquid or use a spoon as if it were soup.

Gosh, this has taken me back. I never liked an actual made jelly, but would happily chomp on the raw cubes. I want some right now!

Oh i still like the cubes, it just mean the strength of flavour thing is odd.

Like how undiluted cordial is sickly sweet & strong flavoured.

jelly is the opposite, its very odd.

I had Lime flavour Hartleys, maybe other brands & flavours are different.
