Miller and Carter is very middle of the road, nothing special.

Depends on the occasion, who you are dining with, your budget and your expectations.

Some people prefer relaxed, casual dining to more formal establishments.

I don't think there is a 'best' place, much of it is down to personal preference. I love the Ivy, don't mind Miller and Carter and have never been to a Botanist. What do YOU fancy?

None of those would suit me particularly- just shows how different we all are.

who is paying?!

Champagne tastes and a beer budget?

Out of those 3 I would choose Miller and Carter but prefer Rules myself.

Get to your local 'Greasy Spoon' and have a full English.

I've never heard of any of those places.  The joys of living in the sticks!

Whenever someone mentions eating at establishments whose names are meant to be well-known, the word 'Expensive' immediately springs to mind.

Experience has taught me that a decent meal can be got almost anywhere and you don't have to take out a 2nd mortgage to afford it.

Miller & Carter is just one of many Mitchells & Butlers' brands, which include Harvester, Toby Carvery, O'Neills, etc.  They're all perfectly good enough plces to eat but none of them are ever going to be very special.

Botanist is better but very pricey for what it offers.

The Ivy trades on its name, with its original London restaurant still being seen as the place where celebs dine and where one needs to book months in advance.  That reputation means that it can charge very high prices for what it actually offers.

If you've got a Cosy Club in your area, that's the one to go for, as they serve quality food at sensible prices and with first class service:

Alternatively, seek out one of the Lounge group, which is run by the same company as Cosy Club anyway:

I thought that you were hard up though?  You need to accept that many (most?) people will probably dine out in those type of restaurants no more than once per month at the most (with many considering them to be a two-or-three times per year treat). Your many posts on eating out seem to suggest that you're expecting to visit them perhaps several times per week.  If that's the case, it's hardly surprising that you've not got a lot of money!

This, my local restaurant, is better than any of those three, but unfortunately for you it requires rather a long taxi-ride;

Only heard of the Ivy - is there one in Wales?  Expensive.
Is this a special treat, Abbey?

Lol.

Try and find their menus on-line and we can all suggest what you should have for a starter.

Hazlinny:
The Ivy can now be found at around 40 locations, including in Cardiff:

^^ Thanks Buenchico - that will be the Cardiff one Abbey is meaning - she is certainly going upmarket from "which pizza or
which curry"!

Never heard of any of them.

There's talk of a McDonalds  in our small town .   I've heard of that!  Won't be using it though.  Too posh for us!

and response came there none....
