I have used the same recipe for some time for a rich fruit cake usually with success.  However the last one I made did not rise properly, the fruit tended to sink and the crumb was rather dense.

The only difference was that I reduced the oven temperature a little to avoid overcooking the base.

Is this the cause or any other suggestions please?

Could be. Do you soak the fruit for a day or so?

My late mother who made the most fabulous wedding cakes always wrapped the tin in brown paper for baking, she said it prevented the outside of the cake burning before the centre was cooked.  She also rolled the washed dried fruit in a bit of flour to stop it sinking.
