I know the 2 Greek Cheese, Feta and Holumi. However when i went to Greece, im sure i had another Greek cheese. It was prepared the same as holumi, by frying and then eating with bread, however im sure it was not called Holumi. Any other famous Greek cheeses that you know? Thanks xx

grugyere?

here

Kasseri?

Haloumi is from Cyprus.

Gruyre is Swiss, if I am not mistaken.

I don't know any other Greek cheese.

gruyere is swiss(named after a swiss village)

but Grugyere is Greek...(:)

I think the one you might be thinking of is Kefalotiri (not sure if that's how you spell it!) We ate it on Thassos, baked in dish with olive oil and loads of garlic. It was delicious, but I'm not sure you can get it here.

I'd have said kefalotiri, too; you should be able to get it from a decent deli or cheesemongers, and the upmarket supermarkets might well have it. Unfortunately we did our week's shopping this morning, so I can't tell you till next week whether Waitrose stock it!

Bohne is quite right about halloumi; it comes from a relatively small area in the southwest of Cyprus and the name is now protected. Bear in mind that very many (possibly most, but I have no evidence) "Greek" restaurants in the UK , where you may very well run across halloumi, are actually Cypriot, but for some reason they seem to think that calling themselves Greek will appeal more to the British public. It's amazing how many people I come across even these days who aren't aware that Cyprus is an independent country and is not - nor has it ever been, despite the efforts of Makarios & Co and the Panhellenic movement - part of Greece.

good on you narolines!!!!!
