My home made bugers tast pretty much bang on the same. What makes them so close is that i use one of those grill pan things ( you know the ones with the ridges). The only problem is they kick out so much smoke they always set off the smoke alarm, but that is the secret of the taste.
A short while ago they were advertised as being made from just meat ( mince) and no " fillers "so I do just that and add some salt for flavour. The sauce on the bun is just mayonaise, ketchup and mustard mixed together. The secret really is in the way you cook them.
parkhead, re your smoking griddle pan - i read somewhere once that if your griddle pan smokes, you should rub salt into it before using it, apparently this stops it. I haven't tried it myself, because although i have a griddle pan, i haven't used it in donkey's years because it's such a pain to wash up! (getting all the grease out from between the ridges - yuck!) I also read that you should never actually put any oil into the pan as all this will do is make it smoke - but you probably already know that! How do i cook burgers? I've got one of those George Foreman grills... but they don't taste as good as Whoppers! =)
