Breakfast

In ancient times the hours of darkness were a period of fasting - not eating. The first meal of the day broke the fast - break fast.

Lunch

This comes from Middle English noneschench, which means noon drink. Over time pronunciation changed to luncheon - lunch.

Dinner

This comes from old French disner - to dine.
In the north of England 'dinner' was round about noon and was a large meal such as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. The evening meal was 'tea' which was a lighter meal. But then there would be 'supper' late in the evening which would also be quite light.
Here in Staffordshire we (well I do anyway) srill have breakfast, dinner and tea.
In Wales it`s breakfast, dinner & tea also
