Why do people always cook hamburgers and hot dogs on Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day? Who came up with that?

What better time to fire up the barbecue than on a public holiday at a time of year when the weather's going to be good? But you left out the steaks, pork chops, ribs, jumbo shrimp, etc, etc.

And of course, just like most Brits who have BBQs, most Americans are singularly unimaginative when it comes to what to cook on them.

Mind you, I was staying with relatives in the US last Labor Day, and we did have a BBQ - just five of us. My cousin's wife, anxious to provide the best sausage equivalent she could, came up with some kind of Bratwurst, and I have to say, they were actually better than most British sausages I've tasted.

Oh! And I left out the South African 'boerwurst' sausage. Not to everyone's taste, but I find it particularly yummy at a barbecue.

Unimaginative? I'd invite you to the ranch here in the western U.S. around Memorial Day and experience the fact that about a month ago attending to the new calves produced a bumper crop of Ricky Mountain Oysters. What a treat. That and barbecued buffalo, elk and deer steaks and roasts, a milk can stew as well as biscuits made in a dutch oven on a coals bed of pine logs... I won't mention dessert... Ya'll come and bring your appetites!

Clanad .....I have just realised that a Rocky Mountain Oyster is not seafood.
The term is a euphemism for buffalo testicles. These are covered in seasoned breadcrumbs and deep fried.
And to think I was going to leave home for you and your pumpkin pie. !!
