We want to buy a bottle of red wine for someone as a thank you gift but don't really know what is good to buy. Any suggestions, we will go up to about 10 - 15? Thanks.

I'd buy Chateauneuf de Pape or Barolo as a thank you - if they're wine buffs then Barolo - make sure it is over 5 years old though. If not, CNdP as everyone has heard of it! Should be able to get them both at supermarkets too.
I was going to sat Chateuaneuf Du Pape as well ...2 out of 2 ain't bad ...go buy it
Sorry about the spelling ... i'm not French you see
10-15 will get you a nice Beaune or other decent Burgundy , which I am sure will be appreciated. C-de-P is certainly extremely pleasant but you might have difficulty finding a really good one; it's produced in some quantity, and most of what's easily available is in the 4-6 bracket. If you have a Wine Rack, Oddbins or similar near you ask their advice (not somebody like Threshers - their "managers" don't know a Burgundy from a dandelion and burdock).
