Oats contain soluble fibres. These attract and absorb water and so 'stiffen up' the content of your gut. This allows the gut muscles to move the food along properly, instead of having it sit there in a more watery state.
Processed cereals and other carbohydrates can lead to an increase your blood sugar levels as you eat them. Oats don't do this to nearly the same extent.
Oats also reduce chloresterol levels in the blood
I work with someone who swears by it for losing weight. If he has to loose a few pounds, he has porridge for brekkie every day. He says it works.
Two things - what's IBS when it's at home? I'm asking (because I don't know obviously) because I too have something amiss with me and maybe if the symptoms are similar, it might help me too.

Secondly, I've took on board the comment about losing weight, so I think I will try it on that basis anyway.
When it's at home, IBS is 'Irritable Bowel Syndrome', and is best at home and not when you're out! Check out more info and symptoms here
