Jamie Oliver may have done a great deal for school meals but he's made searching for 'school dinners', on Google, an absolute nightmare! Here are a few things I've found:

This site's American but some of the recipes seem similar to what was served in UK schools:

Cheese Pie & Cornflake Cake:

Melting Moments & Nutty Slacks:

If you can locate the 'Register' button on that site (it's in the 2nd box up above the first post), you can register for free. You'll then be able to send a message to Queenie (click on her username) who has offered to supply lots of recipes. (See the 3rd post down).

Gypsy Tart:

It looks like that site was an aborted attempt to start a blog about school dinners. If you click on 'View My Complete Profile', you'll find the e-mail address of the site owner. Perhaps you could get in touch and share your enthusiasm for the subject?

Shepherd's Pie & Toad in the Hole:

This might be worth investing a tenner on:

Aagh! AB keeps cutting off the end of my posts, without any warning.

In case that last link doesn't work, I'll repeat it:

Hoping something here is of interest to you,

Thanks so much Chris, really appreciate all that help, its the cheese pie recipe what I was most after! You're a diamond!!
Not what you want but I thought I'd share it all the same. When I was in school in the 1970s, I loved school dinners. I had a friend called Peter Lock who also loved them. We used to have pudding competitions where we would try to out-eat each other. Some puddings weren't too popular with the other kids such as rice pudding or Manchester Tart (pastry topped with custard, jam and bananas). That meant that there was usually loads left over and we would see who could eat the most servings of that particular pudding. One day sticks in my mind when I beat him 13 Manchester Tarts to 12. However he won rice pudding 12 to 11.

Happy days.
Hi there,

This site has recipes and info on the good old fashioned traditional school dinners!

Seems to get new recipes on there almost every day too.

Cheers.

Realise this may be a bit late... but I just noticed your question and thought you might like to know about a new book that's just come onto the market that has recipes for all those School Dinners favourites that you've been craving! The book is called "School Dinners: the Good, the Bad, and the Spotted Dick" and it's by Becky Thorn. Check out this link to the observer word of mouth blog which has been going school dinner crazy over the past 48 hours!
