A European directive dictates that peaches offered for sale between 1 July and 31 October must be at least 56mm (two and a quarter inches) in diameter. Shops that breach these rules risk 10,000 fines and jail. The Co-op is one supermarket which has been incensed by the ruling and started an advertising campaign in the summer, which said, 'Small but perfectly formed'. The ruling could have particular implication for growers of organic carrots, apples, and plums.
