Celiacs - A change in our shopping!

My son has celiacs. Does anyone else who may have this or other food allergies notice how somthing like this adds an additional half an hour to your shopping. I spend at least a half an hour reading the ingrediants on everything before i can put it in the shopping cart!
Any suggestions of where to get GOOD gluten free foods?

Tesco have a good range called Free From,they are free from wheat, gluten and dairy.Sainsburys have DS Dietary Specials and there own brand of gluten free products and Marks and Spencer are fairly good as well.You could ask at the customer service for the list of gluten free products some supermarkets have them.But be prepared these foods are expensive but you can get a free prescription from the doctor for the bread and a few other items and Boots will get them in for you.

Quite a lot of the products in Aldi are labelled gluten free my cousing is coeliac and goes there quite a lot. x

I would like to add that DOVES FARM Flour is great for baking cakes, and I add XANTHAN GUM to my baking too.

KALLO stock cubes are gluten free and gmo free.

We love TRUFREE pasta, from Tesco... it's by far the best and I've tried them all lol....

Nearly all soups have gluten in them so I make my own.

You will get your shopping down to a fine art, and realise that nearly all tinned foods have wheat in them......

You'll also find the cakes in the gluten free isle have Hydrogenated fat in.... I guess they have a shed load left from not adding it to 'normal foods'. Another ingredient I avoid :-(

Finally..... the price!!! the more they take out the more money it costs lol..... small tin of wheat free spaghetti? �1.69.... and boy do I savour my spaghetti on toast :-)

Tescos and Asda I find have been the best in their gluten free section...

Thank you everyone. I really value the advise. It is nice that there are so many products out there to give him such a great selection. Do you think the store bought gluten free bread is as good, or should we be making our own at home with the gluten free flour?

I don't mind the Dietry Specials bread, but it's best toasted.

Tescos has some nice rolls that you can actually eat straight from the pack. They are heavy. I can only manage 1/2 a roll hehe....

I haven't actually tried the gluten free bread mix yet, might be quite nice.....

I have made a few pie crusts with the Doves Farm and you basicaly have to just squish it into the tins before baking.... it's a no knead job.... no gluten no stretch hence the Xanthan gum.... which lasts for ages by the way :-)

All the gluten free bread mixes I have tried are awful but I'm going to try Beryllium's suggestion of the Doves farm receipe with Xantham gum.All the ready made gluten free breads are much nicer toasted.

I definately found the xanthan gum a plus when baking cakes. I haven't done the bread thing yet, do you find 2 pieces of DS Bread enough? it's so filling lol....

TML, I think the bread on the shelves is that size for a reason.... tiny and filling..... followed by?.....

Where do you get the xanthum gum from Beryllium? Yes gluten free bread is very filling as are the tesco sultana scones, I can only eat half.I am really annoyed Tesco have discontinued the syrup pancakes from the Free From range as they are scrummy! I was really shocked to find liquorice had gluten in it, the stuffs in all sorts of things you wouldn't think of.

My sister is celiac and she gets the shopping she needs for her at Aldi they are very good.
