Many American films/books/songs refer to 'twinkies'. From what I can gather it is some really bad-for-you sweet product. Can someone describe what one actually tastes like/ is made of? What is the nearest UK equivalent? If I went to the states, where would I look to find one?

Wonder if Twinkies are a bit like Mr Kiplings French Fancies.....
I thought twinkies were similar to our iced gems which are very small round biscuits with a blob of very hard icing. Haven't seen them for years though.
For the remainder of this document, a "standard" Twinkie shall be understood to mean "a "Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling" created by the Hostess Company, baked by Continental Baking Co, and marketed under the brand name "Twinkie", produced in lot 517/117 0506 with an expiration date of May 10th, 1995

They are really really sweet and sickly sponge cakes but if you must buy one - they are on sale at any drugstore.
I think there's also a crude slang usage in America (or used to be). The American actor Charles Bronson once made a very bad, little-seen film about a relationship with a nubile schoolgirl, which was re-named to for it's release in Britain, but whose original release title in America had been..."Twinkie"...!!
While you're surfing, you might want to look up "the Twinkie defense". A scary reminder of the dangers of sugar, lawyers and politicians.
