Will strawberries continue to ripen if they are kept at room temperature? I hate the pale, sickly ones that are often found in the supermarkets-they always look like they have been picked too soon.

They will ripen to a certain degree, but not an awful lot. They'll tend to get softer, but the flavour won't really develop much more unless they're still on the plant.
Supermarket strawberries will ALWAYS be inferior to what you can grow yourself in the garden or on an allotment. Right now we are picking pounds of strawberries every day and eating them as a dessert, making jam and generally pigging out on them until the gooseberries and raspberries are ready!

It is unlikely that supermarket strawberries will improve after purchase. Their whole idea is to have the fruit looking good at the point of sale regardless of flavour, texture or longevity.

For about 10 a year - an allotment is a worthwhile hobby providing a lot of interest, learning, exercise, great food, new friends, and all-round satisfaction and general well-being.
Excuse me - must go - I've still got today's crop to eat!

Oh!-stop torturing me maxi2....I am drooling at the thought of it. Unfortunately there are not any allotments nearby in my area so I suppose I will have to be content with supermarket produce for now.
