How to soften a block of sugar?

Hello, I have a block of sugar and its gone hard in transit. I use to know how to soften it but I forgot. Does anybody know? (I don,t have a microwave). Thanks.

You could put the block inside a heavy duty polythene bag in case the original wrapping paper bag burst sand keep tapping it gently with a rolling pin or some similar sturdy object like the sole of a shoe.

I'm sure there's an answer involving steam, but for the life of me, I can't remember the technicalities!
You can put it in a bowl and stretch a damp cloth across the top of the bowl (obviously not touching the sugar).
After a while this will soften up the sugar.
