Supermarket Ready Made Indian meals
38 Answers
Hi all,
I really love indian food and you cant beat the real thing from the restaurant can you,
but,
for a quick fix, does anyone recommend any of the Indian ready made meals you can get at the supermarket?
I fancy either a nice spicey chicken dish or a vegetable dish, so if anyone knows of any nice tasty ones i could try please let me know!
Thanks :o)

we go away self catering a lot, and have tried all the ready made ones from all major supermarkets. asda's indian food generally came out top a couple of years ago in the sunday times.

Asda stock a range of ready currys by Ye Old Oake, in pouches. I have tried the Chicken Vindaloo one, it is excellent.
Alternatively as has already been suggested, buy in bulk from your local restaurant/takeaway and freeze them down, the very act of freezing enhances the flavour.
Best of all though, cook your own, it needn't be a fiddly hassle. Fry onion and chopped garlic (from a jar) in butter ghee, add a large jar of Patak's sauce - the vindaloo one is brilliant - heat through, then add 500g of frozen king prawns at the end. This is the closest I have got to the restaurant taste.

I've found the ASDA range of take away curries to be very good (and I love curried food!). I also make my own and my mates find them rather good (ahh, that explains why I have lots of visitors around dinner time... lol).
If you've sussed out the personal messaging stuff over on *Sport* just add me as a friend and I'll get you some easy veggie recipes (like tarka dal, mushroom & potato curry, parathas, chick pea curry etc).

I couldnt really recommend any at the moment. I havent tried M & Ss, but I dont like Tescos at all ... they used to do a nice one, but discontinued it.
Sainsburys used to do a really good Lamb Rogan Josh quite a few years ago ... they still sell one, but its not as good (it is cheaper though now, and still edible) their pilau rice is the best supermarket one Ive tried, however.

Sainsburys Butter chicken is nice - I used to really like a dish they had called chicken lababdar, but they don't seem to do it anymore - or at least they don't do it in the Sainsbury's here, I always got it in my old one, but it is too far to go back. I also like their "taste the difference" lamb something with apricots.
Hi tigger - I agree especially the Dopiaza - that is really nice - I use the pasta sauces all the time - I use them for casseroles, pizzas etc. The tomato and chilli is really nice with some jumbo prawns and served with rice. I keep a stock of them for emergencies. If people pop round unexpectedly, I take some chicken or prawns out the freezer and add a lloyds sauce with any veggies I have or use some frozen onions and peppers - a wee bit of stock and bob's your uncle. You can have baked apples, bananas or pineapple - just cover with a bit of honey or raisins and brown sugar and serve with ice-cream for afters. Our friends are amazed that we can always seem to rustle a meal up for them at the last minute. When we go to their house, even if we are invited for dinner, we always end up with a takeaway as they never have any food in.
