Haggis

what exactly is haggis? is it something made from different parts of animals or is it an animal itself? i did google but the answer was unsatisfactory.

Haggis is a form of sausage/ pudding. It's made from oatmeal, onion, suet, salt, pepper, and possibly other spices. The main ingredients are the heart, lungs and liver of a sheep. The offal (known as a pluck) is first boiled then minced, mixed together with the other ingredients and stuffed inside a sheep's stomach and the opening sewn up. The resulting pudding is then boiled for a further period of time. Usually served with mashed potato and turnip. Properly made and cooked a thing of beauty. Wrongly done, a real horror!

you do see funny pictures of them as little beasts with legs but yes excellent answer by dundurn. You can by some in a tin and it is quite tasty - worth a try if you have never tasted it.

The wild Highland haggis is a reclusive beastie found in remote regions of the Cairngorm mountains. It is noted for its tartan fur, thick ginger whiskers, and its mating call of "och-aye".

Haggis is brilliant !! I buy Grant's tinned haggis from Waitrose, and it is the only tin ever in my memory which instructs me to open it at BOTH ends and slide beastie gently out.
Do that, mash it up wi a fork, 3 mins in the microwave, and serve wi brown rice, baked beans, and chilli sauce.

A jumbo Haggis out of the chip shop is so tasty as long as I don't think about the ingredients lol.

Re - one leg longer than the other -
Haggis catchers watch carefully to find which way the beasties run (clockwise or anti-clockwise) and chase them in the opposite direction so that they roll down the montain and they can bag 'em!
The old ones are the best!!

You can get it in M&S and Booths hun, it doesnt really look like a sausage but more of an odd shaped ball if you will.

The recepies the other guys have given you are lovely although when I was at Uni in Aberdeen, I used to get mine, mash it up and cook it in mushroom and onion gravy in the microwave and serve with mash.
