Thinking of getting the other half a coffee machine for Xmas - one that froths the milk and possibly grinds the coffee. Any recommendations? Are they a pain in the neck to clean?

They ARE a pain to clean, and give only a tiny cup of coffee. Suggest a good electric grinder by Moulinex, a decent Bodum cafetiere, with insulating jacket, and a hand held frother. Magig, and a lot cheaper, and a BIG cup of coffee.
Agree with Paul. For me, the best coffee is from a caftiere with scalded milk added.

Surely you can get self cleaning ones, although I imagine they would be pretty pricey.

Sazzy, if you think a coffee machine is bad - he's never let me forget the year I bought him an electric tooth brush! I thought it was a great idea because he is obsessed with his oral hygiene!
