Is it true that it is bad to put open tins of food such as baked beans in the fridge or is it just something that my mum doesn't let me do? I know that tins maybe used to made of stuff that reacted with the air and then the food once they were open but surely they would have rectified this, in this day and age! To save lazy people like me....

The food will start to go off once the tin is opened, a couple of days is fine (your mum is being a bit over the top) but it will go bad whether it's in the fridge or not
I read somewhere that your not supposed to put anything metal in the fridge as it can poison you dont know all the facts sorry, but i never put tins in the fridge i always empty them into plastic bowls first.
Once the airtight seal on a tin is broken, the metal will start to oxidise. This is made worse by acidic foods such as tomato or fruit juice. So, once you open a tin empty out any unused contents! ((I did my food hygiene certificate last week and spent an hour having this drummed into me>)
hahaha - yep - I remember that from my food heigine course - although I have to admit at home I still do sometimes put tins in fridge!
