In fact supper is the evening meal. I never use the word "tea" except when I'm drinking it... Don't mean to offend anyone but my parents taught me that using that word for anything other than cake and boiled eggs in the afternoon was very common.

Totally agree with you. For example, I have read that the Queen has the meal called tea - ie sandwiches, cakes and scones about 4 pm the meal called "tea" and then the evening meal which is "dinner" - probably about 8 pm. I don't know how someone can refer to "steak and chips" (for example)as tea!
