I have my aged parents coming round for lunch on New Years Day - I would like them to enjoy something that is not "everyday" (they do not eat curry type spicy stuff).
Any suggestions for something special that will not have me in the kitchen all morning.

Do you have a slow cooker?

You could do some nice lamb in a red wine sauce. Bang it all in and leave it to cook.

Serve with mash (add some wholegrain mustard for a bit of a difference). Or sweet potato for a difference.

You could also serve some slightly different vegetables with it.
tell them that you are reenacting the war years Christmas and give them a slice of dripping on bread :-)
How about something like Lancashire Hot Pot. Traditional but can be prepared in advance
A nice fish pie would be my choice.
Dare I say turkey....
cheese on toast with a sliced tomato and sprig of parsley to add colour!!
haggis, tatties and neeps, that's what we will be tucking into for dinner on new years eve, different from the run of the mill and very, very tasty!!
Roast a whole load of chunky vegetables in some olive oil in the oven (eg onion, courgette, pepper, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes etc). Steam a small head of cauliflower and a similar quantity of broccoli. Make up a really good strongly flavoured cheese sauce (nice with some whole grain mustard added). Add the lightly cooked cauliflower and broccoli to the roasted vegetables, pour over the cheese sauce and then cook in the oven for about half an hour and serve up with boiled new potatoes or baked potatoes.
