Have just had a straw poll in the office and we seem to be divided about 50/50.
I like my steak merely warmed through - blue I think they call it - and a number of others like it rare.
However, I was surprised to find that 50% liked it well done - which as far as I can tell is like chewing on old shoe leather.
Would be interested to see the split of users on this site.

If it's done over flame or tenderised prior to cooking it's fine. Nothing like a bit of charred steak! I used to prefer a bit of fillet, but discovered rump has much more flavour if you can be arsed dissecting the fat out. Oh, and there's got to be mushrooms onions and French mustard! How sad am I...
