Rock cakes query...

When my mother makes rock cakes they are a nice pyramid shape before she puts them in the oven but flat when she takes them out. She never used to have this problem and wonders if any of you cooking experts can tell her what she's probably doing wrong?

i suspect i'm stating the obvious here but did she use plain flower by mistake? or maybe oven temp

She has the problem whether she uses plain or self raising flour and she says she knows the correct oven temperature from making these cakes for ages and the oven's working fine.

have you tried following the receipe and making them yourself, using a diff oven?

She's tried using another oven with the same result but, yes, she's suspicious about the amount of milk. The problem is the recipe doesn't specify a precise amount saying just "a little milk". The only thing is she doesn't put much milk in as it is....

maybe get her to try another recipe like this one which specifies the quantity of milk and see how that goes?

Thanks, yes, it finally occurred to me to try the www and, of course, I came across lots of recipes including this one! From what I passed on to my Ma she's ever more convinced she's been using too much milk. She'll try again in a week or 10 days and I'll report back here on how it comes out.

My Ma has now made more rock cakes being careful about the amount of milk used and they were a big improvement. She now thinks she knows what to do to get them perfect.
