For reds - something very hearty like burgundy or zinfandel.  Can't recommend a white, sorry.
I agree with zgma for the reds. For a white, I would suggest something cooling like Frascati.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a peppercorn steak for mixed company, it's really powerful, and white wines just aren't suitable for it.

For reds you need something with a ton of power, like a shiraz or a shiraz-cabernet. Lindemans do quite a good shiraz. For white...maybe frascati, but..I'd go for a rose instead, like Ernst & Gallo's.

A good Aussie Shiraz, x 3.  Depends on your budget, but Oddbins have a good selection and helpful staff, your local offie may be less knowledgeable but ask anyway

I half agree with zgma; Zinfandel would be good - try any from Ravenswood, but Burgundy? I wouldn't describe it as hearty. An Aussie Shiraz, or Rhone should go well.

Though white is not a traditional match for steak, in fact they can be enjoyable. A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, or for some thing a little more unusual try Bonny Doon Malvasia.

Don't get too hung up on matching - its mostly nonsense. Get wines your guests will enjoy.
