I bought a jar of pickled herring with onions and on checking the internet found this goes well with new potatoes and chives, but nowhere does it tell if you eat them raw and cold from the jar or heat them up first. Anyone advice please.
Hot or cold. Nothing wrong with hot pickled herring. That's how ''soused herring'' are served up, straight from the oven. Only problem might be a tendency for the pre-packed ones to break up when heated. (Never buy Lidl's - I did it once, and found they were totally soft and mushy).
Thanks for your answers. Unfortunately I did buy them from Lidls and you were right Heathfield, they were soft and mushy and not nice at all. I tried to rescue them by sprinkling with oatmeal and frying them, but they disintegrated into a messy gunge. I think I better stick to fish from the fishmonger.
