Diabetic child with coeliac disease
7 Answers
Hi
I work in a classroomand we have child with above health problems. Can anyone suggest any reasonably healthy snacks (aside from fruit/veg) that are gluten free. The child is eating about a few packets of crisps a day, mum doesnt appear to have a problem, but with healthy eating in schools i was wondering what alternatives there are. I have looked on coeliac uk but didnt find it very user friendly.
thanks

Try calling Diabetes UK, tel no: 02074241000, or email them: info@ diabetes. org. uk, obviously explaining about the added problem of the child being a coeliac sufferer. It's possible they may have some appropriate leaflets, or advice to give you. I'm guessing the child has Type1 diabetes, and as there are around 20,000 children under 15 in this country...

Hi, 3 members of my family have coeliac disease, its much easier now to find snacks and foods than years ago.
Most Health Food shops stock lots, even biscuits.

•Gluten-free dry cereal in zipper bags
•Individual-size boxes of 100% fruit juice
•Baked or reduced-fat gluten-free potato chips
•Gluten-free baked tortilla chips

I'm guessing the child has Type1 diabetes, and as there are around 20,000 children under 15 in this country with this problem, I would imagine there must be a relevant percentage of them that also suffer from coeliac disese. As such, I would hope that Diabetes UK will be able to help you. As mum doesn't appear to have a problem I think you should do all you can to help the child. Good luck - it's nice to know you care!
A person with coeliac disease shouldn't really be eating crisps, nearly every popular brand and flavour contains gluten.I know this as when my daughter was diagnosed with wheat allergy we had to stop her eating all crisps after studying the packets.I know wheat allergy isn't the same thing as coeliac disease but wheat flour contains gluten so the products excluded from the diet are the same more or less.
I hope you manage to get a list of foods for the little girl in your class to try.

I understand your concern for this little girl but don't quite see why the parents aren't doing anything. Does your comment about mum not appearing to have a problem mean she's not interested, or doesn't understand? Would you be suggesting ideas to her, or actually buying? I agree that several packets of crisps daily are bad news! Diabetics should eat a normal healthy diet, steering clear of all those "special" diabetic foods which are usually bursting with fat and tase awful. Sorry I don't know much about gluten-free foods - maybe google just that?
