Scurvy and other diseases were avoided in the British Navy by carrying large supplies of limes for Vitimin 'C'...(Limeys).
When crews spent long periods with Inuit (Eskimo) tribes, they quickly became very sick from their restricted diets.
If fruit or vegatable consumption is required for vitimins in the human body, how do northern peoples that do not even have a word for 'fruit', much less seen one, survive healthy for 100's of generations???

Explorers that became accustomed to the native diets did quite well. This acclimation period did take several months and great dedication however...
