I could cook it in 30 minutes, but the rice was nowhere near done so it took 45 nearly 50 minutes to cook, and that was without making a pudding aswell!

However, I would wish to say something as regards the cooking of rice. It's a matter of whether you want the rice, fluffy, glutinous, or all grains separated.
I take the view that white rice needs 10 to 20 mins and brown requires 30 to 45 mins.
It can be argued that separate grains is a European preference. It is would be impossible to eat it with chopsticks; unless you wish to spend a very long time eating, one grain at a time.

Quite right yelenots.....You may now be interested in what is true story.
When I was temporarily attached to my firm's headquarters in London I was accommodated with other staff in a small hotel near Paddington railway station. To get to the bar for a drink it was necessary to pass the door which led to the kitchen.
On a very hot Summer evening my colleague and I were proceeding to the bar after having had a very satisfactory dinner and the chef was taking a breather at the kitchen door. My workmate said to the Chef something like " Nice meal, I bet it's really hot in the kitchen." to which the reply came " You can say that again because my piles are killing me."
Makes you think when eating out, doesn't it.
