I have 11 family members here for Christmas dinner, usually buy a turkey and a gammon but because of so much waste I was thinking about getting a turkey crown instead. I know they are quite expensive but wondered if anyone else has bought one and what they thought of it tastewise and value?

i saw one in my tescos for just over £40 which i thought was pricey, had one a few years ago and found it a bit dry
We're having one this year, they seem to be in the region of £15-£20 - I'm been recommended to the Morrisons one by floow ABers, but we've also had the Aldi one in the past, which was very good. Some are stuffed and barded, some are not and you have to do your own.
Always buy a turkey crown ...

1. You get no waste.
2. You're not fed up with eating turkey-based meals right round until February.
3. Quicker to cook.
4. Easier to carve.
^ floow? that should be "fellow"!
There was never any waste on a turkey when I was young. We lived on it for a week and then the carcase was boiled to make soup.

Thank you zzxxee and boxtops, realy I wanted to know what they were like tastewise. Have always found Morrisons very good for meat. Has anyone had one from Costco?

Thank you for all your comments, think it will be a turkey crown this year.
i always buy a turkey as you can use up leftovers and make stock for the soups also
I'd like to try one of those three birds stuffed into each other. How do they do that I wonder, with great difficulty I should think!
If you mean the Aldi one, starbuck, it's really nice - we had it last year - but you have to leave it to cool a bit before carving, otherwise it all falls to bits.
We always bought turkey crowns because of the sheer amount of people for lunch at christmas and theyre fab- no waste at all, best meat and cheaper for what you get. we used to get ours from the Meat Market in birmingham and never cost more than about £25.
Re the three bird thing- never tried one but if you like a laugh you could try sticking a small Chicken inside the Turkey and convince everyone you cooked a pregnant Turkey- bet some idiot will fall for it;-)
barb I really recommend getting a huge turkey - remove (on each side, in one piece) the leg and thigh meat. Carefully remove the bones and all of the sinews - this may take some time but is good preparation for Christmas Eve. You will then have 2 large fillets of leg meat - flatten out and cover with a really good stuffing - I make my own with suet, parsley, thyme and grated lemon peel. Spread this liberally over the fillets and then roll, secure with wooden sticks and string. Wrap each parcel well in tin foil and place in the roasting tin either side of the bird. This method will enable the main body of the turkey to be cooked far quicker. Believe it or not, the brown meat is delicious cooked this way and the suet within the stuffing means no basting is required during cooking. I leave the wings on the bird to balance thebird in the tin. This method will drastically reduce waste and is by far both tastier and cheaper than buying crowns.
the 3 bird from ALDI @£9.99 really good.. turkey ,chicken and duck.. with a stuffing and currant glaze all boned and easy to cook and carve..yummy !
This method also makes carving of the turkey as simple as can be and plates look so much nicer without bones and whalebone type sinews left on them;o)
we just had an essentials crown from waitrose...17 quid but tons on it and totally delicious. If no one in your family likes the brown meat, I'd say go for it.

i got a crown from aldi yesterday almost 3kg for under 20 quid. go get one now.
I have had a few turkey crowns from Costco in the past and they were great. Bought them in Tesco the last couple of years because I was too lazy to drive that far! Always buy a couple plus gammon, meals sorted for a week, no waste, no thinking about what to cook and I love Boxing Day meal of cold turkey, mashed potato and pickles. Almost better than Christmas dinner!
