For around £25-£30. The relative in question likes fine whiskey, but it is a regular birthday not a special one so not going OTT. Anything other than Glenfiddich/GlenMorangie, something a bit different perhaps?

Laproagh is a deep coloured, strong tasting, whisky. It's the one I'd pick if I ever started drinking again.
Tiggs, thats like giving a bottle of plonk to a wine lover:)
tell you my fave is sherry cask canadian club which is a lovely light canadian whiskey...bit more than 30 quid though

I wouldnt go as far to say he is a connoisseur, but he knows his whisky. I cant ever remember seeing him with Bells? And he is not a snob, just appreciates a fine malt is all.
Sorry.

Dont flounce tiggerblue - I didnt mean to offend or be snobbish, its what he likes thats all!

Thanks to all for suggestions
I used to think that Bells was like paint stripper.
I was taught that JD was a bourbon, pasta. I had to do a whisky tasting course years ago and the basic rule was all American whiskeys are a bourbon. guess they think it's not though
Question Author
Funny though, that cheaper imitations of JD call themselves things like "Kentucky Bourbon" and even copy the style of bottle. JD the company insist they are not
No, JD is definitely not a Bourbon. It's from Tennessee. It calls itself a "sipping whiskey".

Aren't Bourbons all from Kentucky ??
Question Author
I have never sipped it, "down the hatch, who's round is it next" usually!
It's not really my drink.

I have a pal who drink JD and Coke, but ... bleeaagghh!
That's what I thought,chuck.....

This is interesting...it explains the difference between scotch whiskey and Bourbon...and also why JD cannot be classified as a Bourbon.....

Bourbon can be from anywhere in the US...

the only thing I can see that may stop JD from being a bourbon is if it's not aged in charred oak barrels (I can't find any reference to if it is or not) but other than that it fits all the other requirements for a bourbon.
Golly, Pasty ... I wonder what's added to JD ?
Question Author
Pasta - that clears it up, cheers
JJ - I dont get a hangover from JD and I dont mind the taste when mixed with coke which is my main motivation for drinking it when in bars and clubs. Vodka kills me the next day!
Oh, no ... I'll take a voddy over a JD any time.
