Apart from the obvious (ie colour) is there any difference between treacle & dark treacle
???

Dark Treacle is more like Molasses, more impurities than lighter Treacle and a more bitter taste.
Golden syrup, which is often called treacle in England, e.g. in treacle tarts, consists of partially inverted cane sugar to which some flavourings have been added. Black treacle is made from molasses to which some partially invert cane sugar has been added
you make treacle toffee with the dark stuff and a sort of butterscotch with the light
