The south and southeastern states have an abundance of walnut trees, (mostly black walnuts) but the recipe takes "green" walnuts and most of my friends have never heard of collecting green walnuts. They wait 'til fall and pick up the ripened ones... just a cultural thing, I suspect. By the way, most of the walnut trees in the south are huge... not very easy to pick green walnots from... Thanks for asking and good luck with the recipe!
