Emily (Wllding ) Davison, does anybody know the origin of her middle name Wilding I have searched the net and books her mothers name was Caisley with no apparent connection to the name any help would be appreciated.

She was/is buried in Morpeth here in Northumberland. Is there a "geordie" connection to the name?

Often middle names which are more commonly surnames were given in 'honour' of someone.
It may be a grandparent or great grandparent.....a god-parent.......a benefactor.....a highly regarded neighbour.

I have a couple in my tree and I'm not sure I'll ever get to the bottom of them.

Jack that's why through the generations my ex's family had the middle name Canute....

Found it very helpful as only one direct line of the family used it.

This could be quite difficult as if it is anything to do with his first wife she was American and they married in the states.

One of my direct line is 'Hooper'. I have managed to get a long way back but still remains a puzzle......

In addition to being Hoopers they are also Elston(e)s.
Up and down and across several generations they used the names interchangeably. They are in records as "...???? Hooper aka Elston(e)" or vice versa. People were born, married, bore witness, and died seemingly choosing whichever name they fancied for any given event....
I'm fortunate that whilst this was all going on they stayed within a very small radius and so are fairly easily tracked but I have absolutely no idea why and how this arose....;o/

Sorry ronsk I have been looking but no getting far. He did seem to give his children middle names without any particular relevance e.g. James Anderson, Alfred Norris. I love Amy Septima................

Anderson was Charles Davison's mother's maiden name, the Wilding name comes from George Wilding Chisholm on her fathers side

her great great grandad from alnwick i think, too tired to do much tonight

his granddaughter Sarah Wilding Davison from another brother died under 1 in 1881

the davisons wildings and chisholms seemed to share their surnames with each other in every generation from about 1720

the davisons married into the chisholms who were from Leith

[dotty.]

and it looks like the chisholm who married the wilding originally did so in Bengal in the mid 1700s

Thanks Dotty it certainly created some interest.. All because my wifes maiden name was Wilding and we got interested in the suffragette side of things through Anthony Quinns latest book.
