Want to look up some family members fuelled by recent BBC programmes. Is it possible to check these online free, if so can anyone point me in the right direction, do feel it is a bit much to have to subscribe to search war records.

Any help appreciated

I know you can check certain records at the Imperial War Museum..
ancestry.co.uk sometimes have free trial period offers ... so check this out as they have the best selection of WW1 records ... I have a subscription so am happy to have a look on a couple of names for you is you wish ......?
Military records are free on Ancestry for the month of November.
A lot of military records for WW I were lost during the blitz. Try writing to the regimental museum giving as much info as possible, service number, rank, name of parents etc. If the person married whilst serving the service number may be included on the marriage certificate.
As already said Ancestry is free for November.

You do have to join up with them to see the records though this is free (you just give your e mail address).

You can download them onto your computer and/or print copies off.

Just a tip when you view the army records you initially have displayed the front page, above in the controls line you have an arrow which says 'next' - click on it to see further documents. Most have about 15 documents.

Try the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at www.cwgc.org for those who died. It is completely free.

Also try National Archives at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk. It is free to search and you only have to pay for records you want to look at.
