My Great- Grandmother's Birth
Perhaps someone can help me to find a record of my great-grandmother's birth. I have been trying to trace it for years but always hit a brick wall.
She was Fanny Jacobs (nee White) and, according to census records for 1871, 1881, & 1891, she was born in Dursley, Gloucestershire, in 1839. She married Henry Ditchett Jacobs on 18th October, 1864, at Bishops Hull, Taunton. Her father's name is given as William White on the marriage certificate. I have my great-grandfather's birth certificate (Henry Ditchett Jacobs) & would like to apply for Fanny's but I cannot find a record of her birth or census returns prior to 1871.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.In 1851, a William White aged 35, and accountant born Dursley, was living at his parents house on census night, his father was Thomas white aged 65, a master confectioner born dursley and the mother jane 58 born Nailsworth (?) .
Also on the 1851, in the Dursley Union Workhouse is an Elizabeth White aged 48 born cambridgeshire and her son daniel aged 14 but i think he was born Dursley.
Anyway, i am going through all four districts for dursley on the 1851 to see if there is anything the transcribers missed, nowt else to do tonight!

I have seached the 10 districts of Dursley and Cam for 1841 and there is no Fanny White aged under 5 living there, I have found a fanny white aged 5 living in the St Mary Redcliffe district of Bristol, and of course there is no relation to head given, but the two adults living there are Arthur White aged 40 a ourneymand coachmaker and ann white aged 30, (remember adulkt ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 and so they are likley older. I've found her baptism on 18 sept 1836 at St Mary-de -lodes, Gloucester. daughter of arthur and anne, cannot find ARTHUR white on the 1851 census. This is the only Fanny I can find on the 1841 census and it does tie in with her age on the 1851.
Fanny was the name she used on every census from 1851 on, and her marriage, my ex's nan was Fanny hatton and that was her name on her birth certificate and was the name she always used, and this one i found was the baprised 9given) name fanny, I have tried every way of searching, including just looking for any female named fanny on the 1841 census for gloucestershire who was aged 5 or under on census night, still only coming up with that one. It is possible that her birth name was not white I suppose.

I have tried to find the census entry for 1861 that you mention when you say that Fanny was working for the Tomlin family in Taunton. I can't get that up on the findmypast website. Perhaps you can tell me what route to take.

We have been there a couple of times & it has one or two large houses so she may well have been in service there. No occupation is given for Fanny on her marriage certificate & her age, and that of Henry, is just given as 'of age' so presumably she was 21 or over. Her father, William White, is listed as a farmer so is unlikely to be the same William White that you found listed as an accountant.

After leaving there, the family moved to Pitchcombe, a village just outside Stroud, and it was there that Fanny died on 17th January, 1900. Her age on her death certificate is given as 62 years. If the age on Fanny's death certificate is more or less correct, then she was indeed likely to have been born in 1838. Henry's occupation on his wife's death certificate is given as gardener.

Dot I have looked through all the listings of registered births for Fanny Whites between 1837 and 1840.......any of these a possibility.

Thank you, craft1948. The second quarter of 1949 seems a vague possibilty but only because Frome is in Somerset. The other locations are too far away from Dursley. Frome is still a good distance from Dursley. Maybe Fanny's birth wasn't registered. I thought registration was compulsory from 1937 but dot says not.
evening, i don't think that Fanny was born after the start of civil registration and her baptism is not included on the IGI, but St james Dursley records for that period are, which leads me to think her family attended the non conformist chapel in dursley. Anyone who did attend a non-conformist chapel at that time was usually farming or trades class, as they did not need the approval or support o the Anglican Church. I have found william white baptised 15 feb 1815 at the durslery methodisdt, son of thomas and charlotte white. Who were the witnesses that signed for her on her wedding lines? I have eliminated most Fanny Whites that i found on the 1841census for that area. There is a place called Cam and a place called Cambridge quite near to Dursley, and the transcribers, not thinking to check, have transcribed the place as Cambridgeshire, Goucestershire, which looks very confusing, so be aware of that as you search.
I will get you the pice number for the 1861 and 51 entries, once you have opened a page of the census, (the original) you just click right or left at the top and you can scroll through whole distrcts, i did this last night and it is very useful, it helps you become aware of the surnames that dominate a community and also what occupations are most common. All this helps later on when you are flumoxed! I did find a Louise Fanny White on the right area and right year but her father was wrong i think.

their first daughter Mary was baptised at slimbridge May 1839
they had 3 more daughters in the 1840s
by 1851 the eldest daughter mary was a sevant aged 13 working closeby
in 1861, her parents had another daughter and a son edward and a 3 year old 'daughter' called fanny white.
in 1871, fanny white aged 13 is working as a dairy maid on a farm in worcester with her older 'sister' elizabeth,
in 1881william and hester are still in slimbridge but by 1891 william is dead and Hester becomes Esther, 2nd daughter Ann becomes Ellen, only son edward becomes William and Fanny is no where!!!
in my original reply, that took ages I included all the names dates farms etc, but i'm over tired now. anyway, The eldest daughter mary born 1839 is a believe your great grandma Fanny and they called her that after her baby sister ann arrived and but she was still mary in 1851 when she was working as a servant, but I am 99% sure this is correct now as i have not found any trace of a mary white as an adult or dying as a teenager.
They lived at tumpy green slimbridge and mary went to work at tumpy farm, but Fanny and her 'sister' Elizabeth went to work on a farm in Worcestershire in 1861.

All the marriages of a John White in the 1770s and 1780s in gloucstershire seem to have been to an elizabther lol
Where is Coaley? he's my favourite to be the John you need.
