craft1948 offered his services on another thread, which was very kind of him. i wonder if he could find out about my grandfather on my dads side of which i know very little. his name was george william taylor born 16 october1882 died 15 april1979. He ripped all the information out of the family bible and destroyed all photos(don't know why) born in Hucknall Torkard. he married florence (don't know her second name) he had three sons, harold, sydney and george. that's about all i know, cheers lslowry

have you already found George on the later census returns 1891,01 and 1911?
George appears on the 1891 census aged 8:
Charles Taylor aged 38 born arsley bedfordshire
ellen taylor aged 36 born clifton bedfordshire
Mary 12
Herbert 10
George 8
Rose 6
Mabel 1
All children born Hucknell Torkard.

In 1901 George still lived at home and there were 2 more kids, Ethel aged 9 and arthur aged 4.

George and his father were coal miners.

There were alot of George William Taylors married in Nottingham in the early 1900s,

thank you so much ,dothawkes your a star. i never knew the names of my great grandparents and didn't realise my granddad had 4 siblings. george was a blacksmith at crown farm colliery until retiring at (i think75). he lived on richmond street mansfield (no10). i was going to subscribe to the ancestry website, but after getting a negative response on a initial enquiry it put me off, as you say there is a lot of Taylors. what would you say the best site was for these enquiries? can i take a short term subscription? the information you have given would be great starting point.
you can go no the birth death and marriages site - google freebdm - for free. On ancestry you can buy credits to use if you only wnat to go on once in a while. As dot has probably mentioned, you can use ancestry free at your local library.

thanks munchie for your help.
on the bdm site, there's a george william taylor, born in Basford (which covers hucknall tokard) between the months of oct-dec 1882
the record details (if you want to buy a copy of the birth cert) is:
area - Basford Quarter 4 Volume 7B page 205

there's another one born in the same town in sep 1883 though, so are you sure about that year ? actually, there's a few GWT's within a 5 year span.

i did a search for GWT's marrying a woman named Florence in Basford, 1900-1950 and only 1 name came up (doesn't make it 100% though, so be careful, never assume). Her full name is Florence Bainbridge, and they married between Jul-Sep 1907 in basford. record details are Basford Q3 Vol 7B Page 333
Question Author
thanks munchie, have just been on the bdm website and came back for more info and saw your reply. my dad was born in 1910 so that fits about florence. also basford rings a bell in my brothers memory
found Florence B's birth - in Basford again, Apr-Jun 1885 Quarter 2 Vol 7B Page 220

GWT's Death record - if you have the right date of 1979 - is: Mansfield Qtr 2 Vol 8 Page 0202

I've saved a copy of the records - only the alphabetical index, not the ACTUAL record if you would like one e-mailed.
I'd suggest using the BDM free site to have a hunt around, it's very good.
If you order a copy of one of the birth/marr/death certs (do it via the official govt records office site and they are £7 each) you'll find parents details, address, occupations. For £7 you'd get a fair bit of info...I'd order one at a time though, and see what info you get.
Hope that helps

Question Author
thanks andy you've helped enormously, i'm not au fait with the procedure for sending email addresses through this site, with my few brain cells left, How do you do it ?
Don't lost your email address on here............is this your Florence in 1901

Bainbridge Henry 57 Head Coal C Hewer Below Ground Holbrook, Derbyshire 109 George Street, Hucknall Torkard RG13/3156/~F135 CD6 R_3156.pdf p.267

This is the site you need for ordering certificates.......once you've registered with them you can order all the ones you'll need.
Please note that you will need where registered, the year and quarter of registraion, the volume number, and page number.

yes craft, it is, my younger brother will be pleased as to the amount of information already supplied on this site by you. it really is good of you people, thanks
crafts probably right about not putting an e-mail addy on here.....some unkind people may use it for spamming.
If anyone has any ideas on how to get the copies sent - email/post or other let me know......otherwise if you use ancestry you'll find them quickly enough now.

Good Luck
If you don;t want to use your local library, and would also not want to pay 80 odd quid for a years subscription to ancestry.co.uk, you can pay £10.95 a month for unlimited use, it's alot better than the very very expensive pay as you go, especially if you are going to be using the GRO BMD index searches. Your local library will allow you top use their internet computers for free, but I realise there may be reasons why people cannot get to use the service, one of which could be that the library puts a time restricyion on when they are busy. So the £10.95 a month is the next best option as they will allow you to not renew it at any time if you are not going to use it, which is what i do as i am often too busy to make use of it.
Don't know why I can't find them in the 1911 census dot............ls do you have the dates of birth and place of birth for the 3 sons........
Try using the option of a linked family member , search for George with a Florence Taylor in the household, or vice versa,
