His name was Alexander Laing, does that sound a wee bit Scottish to anyone else?

craft - he was still entered in the local Romford phone directory in 1967 - quite how his death was registered in Hammersmith is a mystery.
Question Author
A death is registered within the registration district it occurred, not where the home address was, he could have been in hospital
Thats a good point Dot.
The trouble is that he was born in Q4 in 1911 so may have missed the census....what date was the census that year dot?
Luckily even though he was born in 1911 his mother's maiden name is given as Lyne.
Question Author
2nd april craft
If this is the correct John - then when he died in 1968 my Aunt would have been 29.
Perhaps he never had any more children - its just that my Aunt never really looked like her own mother, so I am guessing she looked like her natural father.
think these might be worth a punt......Ada Lyne married Jonathan Baxendall in 1898 in Lancaster...what do you think?
I think you need to spend £7.00 on the marriage certificate for John and Elvina to make sure as this will confirm his age, his father's name and occupation. The wedding was Romford 1936 Q4 4a 1156.
If the age is right, and his father is Jonathan who is a plumber it's the right one.
After all this, going back to the original query, I haven't found any more children for him but will try thegenealogist.
Thanks craft - yes I was thinking along the same lines - been having another look at Ancestry co. - when I was looking a few weeks ago for my husband's family - actually came across a marriage certificate for my husband's nan & grandad - that led me to believe you could view all marriage certificates on this site, but obviously not.
Question Author
The one you looked at would be either on a tree someone else has put on there or on one of the sets of parish records from London that have been added recently.
sorry Dot - what does that mean - that someone has started tree for John Baxandall ?
Question Author
i was just giving you a couple of ways certificates are viewable on ancestry and one of nthem is if someone has scanned and uploaded a certificate and attached it to a public member or private member tree.
Question Author
If you start your tree on ancestry as you attach people you have found in the records a list appears on the right telling you who else has that person in their tree
Dot - you obviously are most experienced with this site than me - I will take another look. Thanks xx
If the John Baxandall born in Dec 1911's the right one (Prestwich Q4 8D 597) then the mothers surname's Lyne as craft said.

I've found 2 brothers on the bdm site -
Frederick C Baxandall born Jun 1913 Prestwich 8D 660
George E Baxandall born Dec 1916 Prestwich 8D 520

both have mothers surname of Lyne, so prbable relatives there.
Eureka.....I think.
I checked for births for Baxandall from 1946 and found 2 for Romford but neither child's mother had the maiden name Pickett.
However. Norma H Baxandall born in 1946 had a mother with the maiden name of Wilsher.
Helen E Wilsher married Francis R Pickett in Romford in 1937.....so it wasn't her first marriage. She would have the name of Pickett on the marriage certificate to John Baxandall but would give her maiden name of Wilsher on their daughter's birth certificate....so yes...your aunt had a half-sister.
However, I think Norma was born in Q1 1946 and Helen and John did not marry until Q3 1946..............
So Craft - Helen Pickett aka Wilsher and John Baxandall had the child the same year as they got wed in 1946 - they must have lived together and got wed because of the birth of the child.

OMG Crafty - you are a little diamond - I will go and have a look on Ancestry co.

Thank you so much

Thanks also Munchie I will follow up your leads aswell.
Question Author

Question Author
Oh no i see. John Baxendall was the aunt's step father and her natural father was pickett. Flippin complicated lol
